CVS Good Deal Alert for Saturday Night

If you have some time, you can head out to CVS. They have a sale going on this week that when you buy 25.00 worth of Gilette products, you get 10.00 back in ECB.

I was going for the body wash, as that's DH's fav, and some of the deoderant. Last Sunday's paper had some great coupons for them as well.

While I was there, I picked up a shave gel that works into the gilette deal, and it was on sale for 3.49 BUT....next weeks ad tags were out and the shave gel was on sale for 1.99. They were ringing up at 1.99 already too.

Now, I didn't do this deal like this, but on my way home I was thinking what a great deal it could really be if someone has multiple coupons for the shave gel.

Girl Scout Cookie Time!

Well......not quite yet, but last night we went to a Cookie Kick-Off. The Princess got to taste each one of the different kinds of cookies, she learned about them, safety lessons, got to play a game with a beach ball to learn the names of the cookies, and had a good time with her troop.

One of the breakout sessions was about how to sell the cookies at a booth. The high school girls who were leading the activity told the little daisy girls that they had an advantage because they were so little and cute. :)

We've been busy!

We've had a busy last year, and I'm looking forward to blogging again.

The Princess is doing well in homeschool. She's currently in first grade, and reading around a third grade level.

She's involved in Upwords cheerleading twice a week, hip hop dance class, a homeschool book club, Sunday School, daisy scouts, and 4-H.

DH keeps busy working 50-60 hours a week at the restaurant. When he's home he loves to spend time with family, reading and computerizing....if that's a word.

I drive a taxi...oh wait, that's not really a taxi. The Princess just calls me the taxi driver. I keep busy homeschooling Shelah, driving her to her activities, taking my parents to their doctor appointments and errands, subbing in the Sunday School, ebaying for us and selling for others, mystery shopping and I've started freelance writing.

Additionally, we are trying to adopt. Within the next few weeks we should be qualified with all the hoops gone through and classes completed. We'll keep you posted!

And you've realized that by doing two or three rebates, you have enough money for that dinner at olive garden or a movie out. How fantastic is that!

*Keep track of your rebates. Some people keep them in a notebook. I keep mine on a spreadsheet on the computer. I simply type the product name - the po box number - the date i sent it, date it expires, and how much I am expecting. That way if I see a rebate and I'm not sure if I've already done it, I can look on the computer and know right away.

Homeschool Happenings

The Princess has been doing really well in her studies!

I just signed her up for a geography fair, with Italy as her country, so if you've got any connections to Italy, let us know!

I'm amazed at her math. She picks it up so fast. She's been doing some books that my sister gave me that were leftover from her class, and she's on the fourth one! They're really pretty easy for her, some days we do eight pages. I'm trying to supplement with other printables I've been finding that look pretty cool, and she seems to enjoy them.

Reading is fun. She gets so excited when she can read words! We have two more days of work, and then we are half-way done with her Kindergarten phonics program. Did we do phonics as kids? I don't remember learning how to read. She's understanding it, and doing well in it, so we'll continue on this course. I really like how idiot proof the curriculum is. It's got bold letters to tell you what you should say, and then what she should say. It's great! Just what I wanted. So, if any of you out there are looking for a program like that, we use Saxon Phonics.

Hubby says he can tell that she's learning because she'll notice things. It makes me feel good as a mommy to know that I can do this. I know it's best for her.

My Barter to Save us MONEY!

So, after looking over our budget, I was realizing if we want to save, we're going to have to tweak some things. A lot of things! I'll be posting more on those things later, but for now this is how I saved money on our lawn mowing.

We have our lawn mowed. I know - you're thinking - do it yourself already! But we can't - or let's just say it's better if we don't.

I am allergic to grass. I know - how lame is that. But seriously, I've never mowed a lawn - ever.

My husband has allergies and asthma. So, when he would try to mow the lawn he turned beet red, face swelled up, and he'd have to keep coming inside for air, and to use his inhaler. When he was done, he'd shower, and do his inhaler constantly for the rest of the day. It just wasn't worth it. So, we have it done. And our lawn guy is really good. He charges us between 30 and 45 a week. But the bottom line is, we needed to use that money for other things.

I was thinking maybe we could get a neighborhood teen to do it for 10 bucks. But we don't even have our own lawnmower.

The next day I got a call from a family friend that I used to sell stuff for on ebay. He had more stuff to sell and wanted to bring it over for me to check out.

He has a lawn service and asked me when he got here about my current lawn service. I was saying how we had to cancel it.......and then it happened!!!! We could barter!!!! I've read about this so much on blogs, and now I was able to do it! We're going to barter my ebay seller assistant fees for his lawn service!

I think we are both pretty happy about the deal!

Financial Shape in 2008!

I've been doing a ton of reading on blogs about saving money. It's different really, when you look at other mom's and women who are actually living in the moment of saving. I love to read self help books about all kinds of topics, but I've found that lately, reading blogs is putting it all together for me.

In many of the blogs people talk about exactly how much each thing is. Like they'll say - my husband makes x and our mortgage is x. Here's how much we spend on a bunch of other catagories.

Don't worry - I'm not there yet! While I admire them for their honesty, that's not something I'm willing to share yet.

So here's what I will tell you.

My husband got a new job in July - and we LOVE it. By we - I truely mean we. All of us - hubby and I and the princess. He's so much more relaxed at this job, and even though he works 50 hours a week - usually about 55, actually - I really feel like he is around a lot! It's wierd, because he was working a 40 hour a week job, and I never felt like he was around. Anyway, back to the topic........

Since he has this new job, I've decided to create a budget based on that. Yes, I know - starting here you ask? What about before? I'm giving myself props for starting okay!

We're very fortunate that he gets paid every week, and we have a bank that will send out checks for us. So...... I took all the monthly payments and divided by 4 and have a checks sent to all our payers every week. I know it may sound silly - but on our house payment alone, we're going to save a ton in interest by doing it this way. And I don't feel like - oh crap - we've got a huge house payment due this week, and then it's party time next week because just the phone bill is due.

Maybe you don't get paid every week, but every two weeks is good too. Even just your house payment is good. I don't have all the answers - but this works for me. Maybe it could work for you too, and you'd save some money.

My daughter got married ten days ago!

Why am I telling you this now you may ask?

Because I just found out myself.

You see.......she came into our office and said, "Mommy, I got married 10 days ago and me and my husband are going on a trip for three weeks."

She says all of this in a princess nightgown she calls her "dress", a gold headband crown, and disney princess backpack. In case you haven't figured out.....she's 5. But married apparently.

Our conversation went something like this........

Me: Really, three weeks, that's an awfully long time, can I come with you?

Her: Sure mommy!

Me: You got married?

Her: Yep

Me: What's your husband's name?

Her: Eric Antonio

Gymnastics or Cheerleading?

I'm currently debating which would be better for my 5 year old.

Cheerleading is closer to the home, but Gymnastics is cheaper.

Gymnastics doesn't include cheerleading, but cheerleading probably includes gymnastics.

Tonight I went to a homeschool educator open house at Science Central. It's a local science museum (they call it that) that is a fun and educational place to take your kids and family.

They talked up this years event like it was going to be a great open house with lots of people there. This year they charged 2.00, and they said it was because they were having real appetizers and drinks there, not just stale cookies like in years past.

I was sooooooo looking forward to this, as I have never been to this before and was hoping for a wealth of information from many places I hadn't discovered and was going to learn a lot.

I got there 20 minutes early to make sure I got a parking spot, otherwise you have to park over in the park, and I didn't want to have to walk by myself that late, because I was anticipating being there a til 8 when it ended.

Boy was I in for a reality check!

Some of the places never showed up! And they were big ones - like the children's zoo! Hello - great place to get business people! Anyway, there were only two floors open - the main floor - with 7 booths, and then the basement. The main floor had the 4-H booth, which I was happy to see because it had examples of the packets that the kids can do. I have been reading a lot about it, and was wondering what these things consisted of - was it going to be over her head, how much work was this actually going to be - etc. Anyway, it's going to be a great tool for science for her and each packet builds onto other packets that she can use when she gets older.

The next booth I went to only had one option for her grade level, but the person there said that the FWAHS (Fort Wayne Area Home School) group has their own science fair and they have many Kindergarteners there every year. Awesome!

I skipped one about the Lego League, she's too young for it, and I don't need to clutter my mind with that info right now!

Barnes and Noble was there though! They had a sign up for teachers and they give you a 20% off card right away! Woo Hoo! Savings! Gotta love that! They also had a bunch of information and book lists that we could take, and a paper that showed all about the teacher programs they were going to have coming up. I really liked this booth - they seemed genuinely interested in the homeschoolers and were sooo happy that we were there. A lot of times I feel I get an insincere comment from people when they find out we are homeschooling. But these two ladies were very nice!

Next was the History Museum. How lame am I, I didn't even know we had one! I'll have to read about that - they offer free tours to homeschoolers!

Next was the Embassy - this lady was not so happy to be there. She had a file folder out and was working on something when I came up. She even said to me - "Oh sorry, I'm just multi-tasking - might as well get something done, right!" I was thinking maybe if she put a little effort into what she was promoting, she would actually be getting something done! Anyway - they offer something that's underwritten by somebody, but she was far to busy multitasking to go into detail. I really thought they would have been promoting their upcoming shows they have, or programs they have - like festival of trees, etc. Oh well, on to the next thing.

Oh - this was PBS! I was in a line of 4 people, and almost passed by and was just going to grab info, and I am sooooooo glad I waited! It was Susie Pierce! I just heard of her at my first HEART (Home Educators Applying Rightous Truth) meeting two weeks ago. She knows her stuff, and is funny too! Anyway - so she tells me that they have a website with over 4000 lesson plans. HELLO! Awesome! That little tidbit of info was certainly worth the 3 minutes I stood in line!

And now to downstairs.... First booth was Botanical Gardens - the guy there looked nervous and I didn't want to ask anymore questions than the lady in front of me did, because he looked uncomfortable as it was. I would have loved to have seen an example of their kits that you can go in and use.

Next booth was the zoo. - They didn't show - Bad zoo, bad bad zoo.

And then the library - woo hoo - lots more info here! That and cute little book erasers that the princess will LOVE! I got a new schedule for September and found out a lot more information on the programs that are offered. It was nice to know how happy the library is to have homeschoolers around. They gear many of their programs to homeschoolers, and for this, and the fact that the Princess gets so excited when she holds her very OWN library card, I pay my enourmous fines without complaining........too much.

Next was a water treatment something. I listened for a minute, took an activity kit and some information, and will have to read that later. I wasn't sure if he was selling some water kit or what, so I just wanted to get out of there.

Then I went to the America on the move booth. This lady had a ton of information out - but was very brief with her discussion. Basically, go to the website and you'll get info. Okay by me.

Ah....and next the Philharmonic. They had two people there and they have one program for homeschoolers. It's not a program, just a listening thing. And then they have a program for 5th graders - again, not a program, just a chance to hear them, but since we aren't in a school, we have to call and make arrangements to go. I think the guy I talked to may have just been there as extra, because the other guy that was there was giving a lot more information. Maybe I just missed out.

And then onto the science central booths. They showed some things that you could do at Science Central, and then there was something about NASA in a side room, and calling and asking for permission. Maybe someone will fill me in on that. They had some free science books, but they looked pretty outdated and too old for the Princess, so I passed.

Oh, and onto the appetizers - they made me laugh. They had granola bars they broke in half on a plate with some hershey cookies. I'm wondering if they bought those from the vending machine? And they had a bowl of popcorn, some wheat thins, and carrot sticks and celery.

They gave us an evaluation form, and I spent quite a long time filling it out. I made several suggestions of who to have for next time. There are so many groups that have programs for homeschoolers, it would be nice to have them all in one place.
